A new type of residential care worker was recently created in Bath and NE Somerset, who can provide some care activities formerly carried out by district nurses / health visitors.
In a number of residential care homes staff have been trained by health staff to carry out a range of tasks formerly the province of health.
It was realised that a training scheme for such combined ways of working needed to be created. The course will be offered at The Bournemouth and Poole College, in Dorset.
The aim of the training is to offer a "joined up" City & Guilds, Royal College of Nursing, ILM and BTEC group of courses to support new type of worker development combining health and social care training as per the package below
City & Guilds Level 3 "NVQ Health and Social Care" plus the following three Qualifications:
The plan is to address the Basic Skills (skills for life) agenda, develop support workers' skill mix, and, through continual professional development, boost the confidence of residential care workers.
The course is due to start in November 2008, and will be available for up to 10 candidates.

The course content has been developed and is ready for delivery, teaching staff are available, and candidates for the new course are being identified and interviewed. The content and basis for the evaluation work to be carried out jointly between The Bournemouth and Poole College and the University of West of England (Bristol) is currently under scrutiny and being finalised.
