New Types of Worker - Empowering the workforce to do the job

Empowering the workforce to do the job

The research of our project has led to the development of a frontline self-managing response team. The team will explore what supports and what are the barriers we face in the delivery in health & social care and how together we can make change happen.

Background

Our organisation primarily supported people with learning disabilities, our influence on change came from the governments initiative on "our health our care our say" we responded to this through our improving lives promoting independence document which outlined new opportunities and new ways of working in areas of support.

Objectives

The main objective was to establish a response team to deliver a wide range of services within the local community and then to establish the service trust wide. The team will work proactively with a range of professionals in the delivery of specialist service covering a wide range of needs. We are on course to achieve our objectives at present as the plan is set to agreed milestones. The link to the New Types of Worker aims & objectives is to challenge current workforce systems, skill up frontline teams into the role of personal assistants and to identify new training opportunities to promote new skills and competencies. The potential benefits would lead to a better service for our customers through choice of provider and give control to the service-user through the implementation of a bespoke service.

The Plan

We originally set out from a project management approach to develop a pilot project in supporting people on a care pathway, people who had been discharged from a hospital or nursing care environment. The vision was to work with identified healthcare professionals and place the focus on rehabilitation and the promotion of independence for the customer. We had established a project team at this stage that consisted of a wide range of personnel from our organisation who had proven skills and experience.
