New Types of Worker - Learning disabilities day service County Durham Care

Learning disabilities day service County Durham Care

The project focus is managing the development of Learning Disabilities day services supported by Person Centred Planning. PCP has given the organisation an opportunity to take action in modernising its day services, which is driven by ‘Valuing People’.

The new roles and funding are now mainstream and developing into further geographical areas of Durham via a successful change management system. A lot of people, including parents/carers, service users and council members needed to be convinced that the changes to the day services were needed, and a DVD was made by members of staff to this end. £1.3m was agreed by the Council to support the changes. The project is driven and managed by Les Shaw, Karen Vasey and Denise Barden who have been instrumental in making the project successful. The management of the project is now integrated into everyday policies, systems and procedures. Job Descriptions, person specifications are available as supporting material. The strengths of the project have been a determination by individuals and teams of staff to make this work. Achieving funding from both Skills for Care and from Council coffers has enabled huge ‘change and improvement’ successes. Social marketing to gain the support of parent/carers, staff and members have made a big impact.

Development & Training activities include targeted skills and knowledge based events i.e. facilitation, diversity, PoVA etc, and also NVQ 2 and 3
