Residential Care Bath Bristol and South Gloucestershire
Summary
A new type of residential care worker has been created, who can take on some activities formerly carried out by district nurses/ health visitors.
Description
In a number of Local Authority residential care homes staff have been trained by health staff to carry out a range of tasks formerly the province of health staff. The training has been closely linked to existing occupational standards and NVQ elements.
Outcomes
(An independent Evaluation is being carried out by University of West of England and Warwick University)
- Hospital admissions have been prevented - Money saved
- Serious illness and conditions have been spotted earlier, making treatment easier and less traumatic for residents and more cost effective
- Residents and their families report an increase of satisfaction with the more "holistic approach"
- Staff report an increase in job satisfaction, morale and confidence
- Links and understanding between health and social care have been improved and better working relationships reported
- Blurring of roles between health and Social Care
- More Young People attracted to considering residential care as a career choice
